Alpine huts have worked this way for a century. Nobody follows you around with a mop and nobody charges you two hundred dollars for one. You clean up, you photograph it, and the next party arrives knowing exactly what they are walking into.
A $250 cleaning fee on a two-night stay is not really about cleaning. It is a platform assuming you will trash the place, priced in advance and charged to everyone, including the people who would have left it spotless anyway.
The kind of person who drives four hours to ski a line at dawn is generally not the person who leaves a sink full of dishes. Hut culture figured this out long ago: when the people using a place are the ones responsible for it, standards go up, not down.
So the handover replaces the fee. You leave it right, you show your work, and the next party sees it before they arrive.
You see the previous party's handover photos before check-in. If something is off, you say so then — not in a review three weeks later.
Use the place. Track in snow, dry your skins on the rail, cook a real dinner. That is what it is for.
The host's list, not a corporate checklist. Usually strip beds, run the dishwasher, haul trash, sweep the mudroom, set the thermostat.
Photograph the main rooms and post them. That set becomes what the next party sees, and your record with the host.
It is not free labour. You are doing thirty minutes of tidying instead of paying a fee that often exceeds a night's rate. If a house needs a deep professional clean between every stay, it probably is not a fit for this.
It is not surveillance. Photograph rooms, not people. Handover sets are for the host and the next guest — they are not published to the open web and not used to advertise the house.
It is not a damage tribunal. Beaten Path does not adjudicate whether a house was left clean enough. Photos give a host and a guest a shared record to sort it out between themselves. Things break in mountain houses; that is what a deposit and a conversation are for.
It is not built yet. Photo handover needs accounts and storage, which means a real backend. Right now this is the standard we are setting with founding hosts by hand. Say if you want in.
